Next year Gym & Tonic Movement will have been in business for 8 years, and over that time we have evolved, changed and learned more.
Here are 4 beliefs that have changed over the 8 years about how I approach fat loss & exercise.
Weight loss & fat loss are different. Weight loss is the loss of over all weight from a body, this includes fat but it also includes muscle loss as well. We do not want to lose muscle- period, especially if we are trying to reduce our overall size. This is when fat loss comes into play. We may not see drastic changes in the way the scales move, but our clothes fit better, we look better and feel better. This is because we have managed to maintain muscle (which burns more calories and is better for long term health) by prioritising our protein intake.
Protein is queen and it's what we should focus our attention on when choosing our food.
When you feel like shit you need to work harder physically. Using the excuse that you're too tired is not a good enough reason to skip a work out (sleep deprived mama's I'm NOT talking to you). Exercise is literally the thing you need to make you feel better, so saying you feel too shit to do it is counter productive to how you want to feel.
Unless you want to feel like shit.
Be disciplined, don't rely on willpower. Willpower is a sudden and momentary, while self-discipline is structured, well thought out, and consistent. We live in an age where things are easy; food, entertainment etc and we know out brains will always search for the easy option (it's how we are wired). To feel successful we need to switch off to ease and focus our discipline on accomplishing any goal we desire. It won't be easy, and really we don't want it to be, because the harder we exercise discipline the greater the reward at the end.
Life is a series of lessons and I always love looking back over the last 12 months to see how I have grown.
I'll share my top 4 lessons from this year on Insta tomorrow, so head over to check it out @gymandtonicmovement.
